Types of Pedicures

This service is designed to address certain foot care concerns. By using a footbath, this softens the dead skin and debris under the nail. It is important to remove the dead skin and material under the nail to help address certain skin and nail concern. For possible nail infection, please seek medical intervention to address the infection properly. In-between your appointments, it is important to remove the infected material under the nail. This will assist the growing nail to possibly reattach to the nail bed. Removing the material will prevent the nail from growing over it and becoming infected again.

A great resource is a licensed nail technician. As a customer you need to be aware of the cleanliness of the salon as well as the education level of the nail tech. A good pedicurist should not reuse disposable items and will sanitize their tools after every use. As a Licensed Nail Technician, I general advice my customers to come in monthly not just to trim their nails, but also to address the skin needs of their feet. I know that the care of your feet is often neglected, but remember they are the foundation of you.

Dry pedicure simply does not have a footbath, other than that the pedicure process is the same. Putting your feet in a foot bath can dry out your skin and act as a barrier between your skin and the products. If you have health skin and nails, there is little need for a footbath. The use of warm towels helps to make the dry pedicure a relaxing experience. A dry pedicure is designed to be quick and maintain already health feet.

Reasons to look for a specialized pedicurist

In order to have great results, it is important to be patient. Most treatment services take some time to reach a client’s goal. Home care and proper foot ware are essential to reaching your foot care goal. The use of products at home will help to reach the clients goals in a reasonable amount of time. Each service provides roughly 20% of the care needed. If home care is not easy for a client then coming in more frequently will be the best option.

There are not many pedicurists that have taken the additional training needed to work with diabetic, geriatric, and immunocompromised clients. These clients must be careful due to their increased risk of infection. The nail technicians who have started working in specialized advanced foot care, are working in podiatrist offices, foot and ankle surgeon’s offices, medial wellness spas, and some salons that have a focus on wellness services.

Few salons have an autoclave. Some funguses are hard to kill with disinfecting solutions alone due to their waxy coating. An autoclave ensures that the tools are completely sterilized.

It is important for a salon to use proper techniques to provide a clean and gentle service to any client, maintain cleanliness to reduce the risk of infection, and to recommend treatments or medical intervention as needed.

When working with high-risk clients, it is important to reduce the risk of injury to the skin. Trimming the cuticle is not advised for high-risk clients. There are cuticle removal products and bits for e-files that are gentle on the skin. Proper training on e-files will prevent over filing, injury and heat. To help keep the risks of infection as low as possible, there are things clients can do. It is not recommended for a client to shave or remove hair from their legs prior to receiving a pedicure. If a client has any cut or sores it is recommended to reschedule the appointment.

The Benefits of getting a regular pedicure

The risks of circulating footbaths

A circulating foot bath has an internal piping system that moves the water around. The cleaning products used in the footbath are approved to kill viruses, bacteria, and most funguses. The cleaning products used cannot kill certain kinds of funguses due to the waxy coating that covers the spores. Because of this, the recommendation for salons is to only provide services to clients with health skin and nails. The other risk unique to circulating footbath, is the biofilm that builds up from products and skin cells. There have been many recorded instances of infections correlating to circulating footbath.

Understanding common conditions

Identifying issues early on is the key to an easy treatment. If left untreated, these issues become more and more difficult to reverse. The main key to solving these issues is patience and consistency. Make sure to learn about how nail infections and athlete’s foot can take hold so you know how to fight them.

Heels can crack when the skin around the rim of your heel because dry and thick. Several factors can raise the risk of developing cracked heels, including obesity, wearing open heel footwear like sandals, cold dry skin, and friction from the back of your shoes. Wearing supportive, properly fitting closed shoes with socks may ease symptoms. Getting a proper stride when walking can relive pressure on your heels and reduce cracking.

Fissures or deep cracks in the feet develops as a result from dry skin. It is easy to get dirt and bacteria trapped in the crack. The body cannot heal the crack with dirt or bacteria present. Dirt and bacteria irritate the crack, and the fissure gets deeper and deeper. The body can begin the healing process once this material is removed from the crack. By keeping the skin cleaned and moisturized at home, a regular pedicure will help to take down the dry skin gently and assist in healing the cracks.

Fungal toenail infection can be caused by yeast, mold, athlete’s foot, and dermatophytes. It is important to seek medical advice when you first notice the signs of infection or after trauma to the nail. If ignored, it becomes very difficult to clear up the infection. Once nail fungus has set in it takes 8-12 months to remedy. Once you have contracted a nail infection, you spread the infection to your shoes and socks. If you do not treat your shoes and socks, you will contract the condition again. It is important to remove the waste product and impacted material from under the nail. If the material is left, then the nail will grow over it and become infected again.

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection on the skin of the foot including between the toes. It can present as a rash and cause the skin to peel and itch. Athlete’s foot is highly contagious and hard to get rid of. It can invade the nail plate creating streaky white toenails, yellow patches on the toenail, or lines on the toenails. It can also cause the toenail to become detached from the nail bed. Once you have contracted the condition, your feet, your nails, your shoes and socks need to be treated. You will continue to re-infect the foot by wearing the contaminated shoes and socks. Many people suffer from this fungal skin infection and can pass it on to a family member. You must disinfect your socks and shoes every time you take them off until the infection has cleared.
